    One thing for sure, is that the concept often feels overwhelming when we first try this type of approach.

    My view point is that, guided discovery, can be one of the most beneficial interventions used within CBT. In a nut-shell, guided discovery is a process that a therapist uses to help his or her client reflect on the way that they process information. Through the processes of answering questions or reflecting on thinking processes, a range of alternative thinking is opened up for each client. This alternative thinking forms the blueprint for changing perceptions and behaviours.

    Essentially, it could be suggested that a client approaching a CBT therapist is initially functioning at a mindless level. This is not to say that a client is ignorant or not able to think. Rather, that the client has a range of automatic cognitive processes that are being allowed to run without intervention. Some of these thinking processes may have been developed in childhood, while others may directly result from an immediate mood state.

    A useful analogy for guided discovery is to think about going to an opticians for an eye test. The optician may initially put a contraption on their clients head with a range of lenses on it. Initially, their clients cannot see through this contraption very well (i.e., what they perceive is a blur). The optician then sets about gradually removing or replacing lenses, and after a while, through a process of trial and error (and feedback from the client) each individual begins to see more clearly.

    Guided discovery works in exactly the same way as the above example. Except, instead of using optical lenses, the CBT therapist helps the client use lenses of perception. Perceiving information is a different way allows each client to access a range of choices in their life, ostensibly, to see their life through different lenses. When we view life in a different way our emotional reaction to events also shifts. These types of continued conscious re-evaluations in CBT are very important because they lay the foundations of future automatic thinking and make relapse less likely.

    A religious rights leader in the US recently sparked off a debate with his comments on the inappropriateness of Yoga for those of the Christian faith. Arguments have since flown fast and thick on all sides over the linking of Yoga with specific religions.

    As a proponent of Yoga as the ultimate challenge for the attainment of holistic wellness, I have been extremely pained to read all things related to the matter. For one, I havent been able to fathom the reasons as to why this should even be thrown on the table.

    It is true that Yoga originated in India, the same country which produced great religious systems such as Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. Indeed, India is one of the two regions of the world which has been the cradle of religious thought, the other being the Middle East which produced Christianity, Islam, Judaism et al.

    However, Yoga at its best is a philosophical system which is thought to lead to self-realization. For as long as it has existed, there have been no religious incantations associated with the practice, nor does it propagate the worship of any one supreme figure. It is infact philosophical and not iconic in any way.

    The Yogic systems prevalent today are a fragment of an entire pristine system, and are mostly only corporeal; they strive to keep the body healthy through various poses and breathing techniques. The only Hindu connotation I have found evidence of, is the sounding of the syllable Om while breathing, which is also equally construable as a shortening of Amen. Interestingly, Om and Amen have similar meanings and origins as well.

    I personally know scores of people of various religious beliefs following Yoga, and who have found no conflict between their religion and the practice. Yoga, which is devoid of any religious connotations is even widely practiced by atheists who would have otherwise shunned it in the name of religious circumvention.

    My personal experience tells me that one neednt even go deep into research, because a quick online search will point to the fact that Yoga is linked with environmentalism, healthy food habits, exercise, fitness and mostly good health, but definitely not with any strong religious associations. Even specifically searching for a link did not yield any results to indicate the gentlemans concerns that Yoga is a symptom of postmodern spiritual confusion.

What few services existed declined in the last two decades because of political instability.

    The country spends less than $85 per person on health care every year, and much of what is actually delivered is done by a patchwork of agencies from around the world.

    Haiti has a public health crisis, according to Mdecins Sans Frontires (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders, one of several foreign medical aid groups that operate free emergency health services in the country. MSF’s own clinics are often overwhelmed by people who can’t afford to pay for private care. Public hospitals and clinics are plagued by management problems and shortages of medications, says the organization.

    “The reality of what we are seeing is severe traumas, head wounds, crushed limbs, severe problems that cannot be dealt with with the level of medical care we currently have available with no infrastructure really to support it,” said Paul McPhun, operations manager for the group’s Canadian section. The country’s health indicators are grim. The average life expectancy is about 52, and Haiti has the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the region.

    More than 138,000 children under five die of preventable diseases every year, and women routinely die terrible deaths in childbirth because they live too far away from medical help, in rural areas without services or simply can’t afford to pay for services.

    UNICEF says that out of every 100,000 live births, 670 women died of pregnancy-related causes in 2006. That’s five times the Latin American average.

    Diarrhea, respiratory infections, malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS are leading causes of death. There is poor sanitation and increasing malnutrition, brought on by growing poverty.

    In rural areas, only 14 per cent of residents have adequate sanitation, and most rural Haitians lack even basic health care services.
